Fractional Head of Computational Biology
Senior computational biology judgment, one day a week, working as part of your research team. Leadership without the headcount.
Who this is for
You need computational biology leadership but not a full-time hire. Maybe you're early-stage and you can't yet justify a full Head of Comp Bio. Maybe you have a junior Computational Biologist on staff and want some expert oversight. Maybe you want to make sure that hiring a Head of Comp Bio is the right move for you.
This engagement works well when there are active programs that need analytical oversight, when you're onboarding CROs or selecting vendors, when you're running clinical data reviews that need a computational perspective, or when you want someone in the room for key scientific discussions.
It is not a good fit if you need someone to carry out a single defined analysis — that's better suited to the Analysis Review or a project-based engagement.
What's included
- In the room when experiments are designed, not just after the data comes back
- Review of internal and vendor-generated analyses — before they drive decisions
- CRO and software vendor selection and ongoing oversight
- Hiring: role scoping, technical interviews, and onboarding your first comp bio hire
- Attendance at research and data review meetings
- Async availability for questions and decisions that can't wait for the weekly day
- Interim coverage during an active search, on the same terms
How it runs
One day per week, in three- or six-month blocks. The day is yours — used for whatever combination of meetings, reviews, and async work is most valuable that week.
Six-month blocks are priced at a modest discount relative to three-month, because income certainty has value on both sides.
What you get
- Senior review of analyses, experimental plans, vendors, and hiring decisions one day per week
- Async availability for time-sensitive questions between weekly days
- Presence in key research and data review meetings
- End-of-block summary document (on three- or six-month engagements)
- Hiring support — role definition, interview rubric, candidate evaluation — if building toward a full-time comp bio team
Price
One day per week, in three- or six-month blocks, working remotely. Day rate quoted on scope.
Interim coverage during an active search is available on the same terms. Six-month blocks are priced 10–15% below the three-month equivalent.
Biomarker strategy ahead of a Phase 1 readout
A clinical-stage immuno-oncology company had reached a Phase 1 readout with a promising signal but no clear patient selection strategy. I re-analyzed the response data across clinical and genomic covariates and identified a biomarker-defined subpopulation with markedly better outcomes. The team expanded their Phase 2 enrollment criteria to capture that population — changing which patients they enrolled and which endpoints they powered.
